In 1996, two families began hosting a camp for families with kids of African heritage. This camp provides an opportunity for children to connect with other children of similar ethnic background. For interracial families, formed either through birth or adoption, we offer peer support, parent support, and a connection to others for those who reside in smaller, more remote communities. Added to this, cultural support and awareness of African heritage are a major aspect of this festival.

This “parent-driven” event has provided opportunities for positive adoption and cultural mentoring. We have recently felt a need to expand the focus to be more inclusive to families with children from all over the world. Kelowna does not have a significant diverse population, as reflected in larger centres such as the Lower Mainland, British Columbia. We recognized a community need as the “support” ended when the adoption was complete. Many families found themselves unconnected and lost when it came to continuing the cultural history for their child. Because of the lack of cultural diversity in our local community, we believed this need was very important for the emotional health of our children to bring our families together. This is the one time when families of diversity can surround their children with families of similar characteristics. Some of the children have actually reconnected with others from their birth communities, including orphanages from their country of origin. Some of these children have shared similar birth experiences. This annual event also provides the opportunity for our children to meet adults who share similar birth and cultural histories. Essentially we have provided lifelong connections through these networks for families.
